Ohio is known as the "Mother of Presidents"
Ohio claims eight presidents who have been elected president from the state of Ohio. Seven were born in Ohio.
Our 9th president was William Henry Harrison-Fought and defeated the Native Americans. He gave the longest inaugural speech, caught pneumonia, served the shortest term-32 days. Ohio was not a state when he was born.
Our 18th president was Ulysses S Grant-He fought in the Civil War and was a well known Civil War General. He served as president for 8 years but many of the people in his administration were found to be dishonest. His main concern as president was to rebuild the nation after the Civil War.
Our 19th president was Rutherford B Hayes. He also served as a general in the Union Army. He stated he only wanted to serve one term as president and continued to help rebuild the nation. He made many reforms on how the government was run.
The 20th president of the U.S. was James Garfield. He had served in the Civil War as the Army's youngest general. As a young boy he guided the mules along the canal path and was known as a towpath boy. He was shot after only serving 4 months in office by a man who had wanted Garfield to give him a government job.
The 23rd president was Benjamin Harrison-the grandson of William. He also served in the Civil War. He went to law school at Miami Univ. and later practiced law in Indianapolis. Indiana also claims Harrison as a president from their state.
Our 25th president was William McKinley. He served as a private in the Civil War and was a lawyer in Canton after the war. McKinley was known to wear a carnation every day. He was elected to serve a second term but was shot a year later at a Pan-American Exposition by a man who did not believe in government.
William Taft was our 27th president and he worked to make many improvements in government. Taft was later appointed to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He was known for starting the tradition of throwing out the first pitch to start the baseball season.
The last gentleman to be elected as an Ohio president was the 29th president-Warren G Harding. He taught school for some time and also bought a newspaper. Many troubles were found in his administration. He became ill in Alaska while on a trip. He died in 1923.
